The flames had risen quite a bit, and Macavity contented himself by looking into it. Glowing in normal campfire-y colors with a bright tinge of plum for happiness, the fire was a comforting source of light. "I know, right? The no-junk-food rule is kind of a downer..." Then, after a short lull, "You're welcome, Damien."

Damien smiled and looked up at the sky. He waited a while, thinking of something to say. Finally he said "...we could always sneak out of camp to get some marshmellows and stuf...." The blue-eyed teen wanted to see Macavity's reaction to the suggestion, but kept his eyes to the sky.

Macavity looked over at his new friend in shock, and a quick glance told him that the camper was serious. "Really, Damien? Well... I'll go get them if you split the cost halfsies with me. You won't even notice I'm gone." He stood and looked at the boy, as if challenging him to doubt him. Sighing, he muttered to himself, "It's definitely dark enough...... I think."

Damien looked at Macavity, and gave a half-smile. "I'll pay for it all, you don't need to worry. And i'm not asking you to use your powers or go alone or something, I can't stand the idea of people using their friends like that. I am offering to actually walk out of camp and into the city and pick up some snacks at a corner-store." He explained. "It's more about excitement and snacks than anything else. I'd go by myself but it just makes me feel a little safer to have a friend nearby..." Damien admitted, looking away and blushing slightly in embarrassment.

"Damien? Are you blushing?" Macavity laughed a smidge, because it was a useful cover-up for his own pink cheeks. The night was getting colder, but still he stood. Reaching out his left hand to Damien, the son of darkness smiled. "Ready? Just tell me which direction and how far. I can get us there quickly... Then we can take the long way back!"

When Macavity pointed out that Damien was blushing, it caused him to blush even more and he laughed nervously. Damien liked the idea though and he smiled at Macavity. "I think there's a store north, northwest about 3 blocks from here." He told his friend.

The raven-haired almost-18-year-old pulled up the other teen, closing his eyes as he did so. "Don't let go of my hand. No matter what, okay?" Macavity opened one eye to make sure he complied. When he was satisfied, the eye closed and he took a shuddering breath. After taking three steps to the north, Macavity opened one eye. "I think we're here." He took another laboured breath, but opened his other eye. They snapped out of the shadow with eyes open wide.

Damien nodded, wondering what might happen if he let go. 'Don't do it. Don't do it. Curiousity killed the cat. Don't late go.' He kept thinking to himself. When they finally made it through the shadows to the alleyway between some stores where he had told Macavity to go, he looked around wide-eyed. "Wow...dude, I wish I had you powers.." the blue-eyed teen said excitedly as a grin broke out across his face. After a few seconds he looked at Macavity as his smile fell. "Hey...what would of happened if I had let go of your hand...?" Damien asked.

Macavity smiled back wearily... He had never tried taking someone else through the shadows before, and it took up more energy than he had anticipated. "Erm..." The boy noticed the worry in his friend's tone, and tried to word it in a way it could be understood. "Well... A shadow is kinda like a tunnel, I guess. You can go through it, but takes the right speed and I can't go too far." He shrugged. "The only way I escaped that hellhound was my dad's help... Anyway, I can't go that far again. If you had let go, and if I had opened my eyes to find you......" His voice caught at the thought, and he pushed down the lump to say- " I wouldn't be able to get you back, and you..." That blasted lump again. "Y-you would be trapped in the shadows for all eternity." Macavity tried to break the tense feeling, to take a step forward... And he fell, a single tear appearing in his eye from the impact. His energy was spent, plus the emotional stress from his friend's simple question, had gotten him to his breaking point. It was embarrassing...

Damien was silent until he saw Macavity fall. Damien reached out and grabbed the other boy, holding him close and only being able to cussion his fall so he didn't hit the ground. Damien knelt there hugging his friend, and tried to calm Macavity. "Hey, it's alright, I'm sorry I asked. It's okay, I'm right here, aren't I?" He said to the child of darkness in as best a calming tone as he could muster.

Macavity was gripping Damien's arms with such force, he was surprised he didn't bleed, but the boy just kept dry-sobbing onto the other's shoulder. He kept whispering "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry... I don't mean to do this... I hate when I get this way..." It was fading, the world around him. Macavity could only focus on his friend's face, to know he wasn't alone in his nightmares. He kept breathing in raggedly, the sobs choking his throat. Slowing his breaths, he murmured, "The gods do not take kindly to the darkness and shadows faltering. They do not like my weakness."

Damien held his friend through all this, trying to calm him and reasure him. The other boy's grip was definitely going to leave bruises, but Damien ignored this discomfort as best he could. "Shh, it's OK, don't worry. Who cares what the gods think? And I don't blame you for getting this way, it's hard to deal with something like this." Damien said, wondering if what he was saying was causing more harm than good. He wished he knew how to help. "Hey, everything's gonna be OK..." Damien added.

Macavity's vision slowly returned, and he softened his grip on Damien. He pulled back, but just as quickly threw his arms around the child of chaos. "I'm sorry..." he whispered into the boy's ear, "I dumped everything on you... It's not even that bad, really. I'm just really really tired right now... Stupid insomnia."

Damien was shocked initially by the sudden action, but after a few seconds he hugged the child of darkness and shadows, and held him tight. "It's completely fine, I don't mind at all. Everyone needs someone to vent to and talk to, that's what's friends are for." Damien said. He wondered about Macavity's insomnia but held his tounge on this matter afraid to upset his friend a second time in a row.

Macavity pulled back again to look in his friend's eyes, a smile slowly appearing on his lips. "Guess what we forgot, Damien?" He leaned back against the brick walls of the adjoining buildings, sighing. "Marshmallows........."
